Forensic Log Capture — Glossary

·

What it means

Forensic log capture is the process of immediately saving a permanent, detailed record of an AI agent's activities during or immediately after an unexpected event or error. Because AI systems generate massive amounts of data that are often overwritten or deleted to save space, these logs can disappear quickly. Forensic capture ensures that the breadcrumbs — such as the AI's reasoning steps, the data it accessed, and the commands it sent — are preserved in an unchangeable format. This allows human investigators to reconstruct the exact sequence of events to understand why the AI acted the way it did, rather than relying on incomplete or altered information.

Why it matters for governance

It provides the audit trail needed for accountability and enables accurate root-cause analysis during regulatory reviews or internal investigations.

Example

An automated customer-service AI accidentally shares a user's private credit card number; forensic log capture immediately snapshots the reasoning chain and database queries that led to the leak before the system clears its temporary memory.
